1 day scenic bird watching and wildlife tour

8 am = Pick up from Christchurch I-site / art centre (or arranged pick up prior to tour). We will head to the Waihora Lake Ellesmere which is known for its rich birdlife. We will set out on a short walk around the lake’s edge, seeing many bird species including Herons, Shags, Gulls, Teals, Ducks, Stilts, Oystercatchers, Geese, Swan, Kingfishers, Finches, Swallows, Bitterns, Pukeko, Dotterels, Skylarks and Terns.

Mid Morning = A short walk through a lush valley of ancient trees and songbirds. Look out for the Korimako (Bellbird), Tui, Fantail, Greywarbler and other interesting birds here. Afternoon tea will be served for everyone with fresh coffee/tea and yummy favourite New Zealand treats!

Late Morning/Mid Day = We take a short drive to the Pacific Ocean where you can enjoy a stroll on the beach which is known for its many gen stones. Look out for the Banded Dotterels, Oystercatchers, Shags, Terns and Giant Petrols flying on the ocean surface. A stop in at the fine gem stone/fossil shop on the way out is sure to amaze.

Mid day Early Afternoon = We drive over the hill with fine views of tidal bays and volcanic mountains, arriving at Governors Bay where you will have one and a half hours for lunch. Governors bay is an idyllic spot to relax with views down the Lyttelton Habour out into the Pacific Ocean. Look out for the Native Wood Pigeon soaring through the sky as their is a great population in this bay. The Governors Bay hotel serves delicious food also She Universe which is an awesome chocolate shop, restaurant and cafe is across the road.

Early Afternoon/Mid Afternoon = After your lunch we will drive to the top of the Port Hills. Here you will have a spectacular view of the Southern Alps, Christchurch city, Pacific Ocean and Banks Peninsula, a great spot.

Late Afternoon/Evening = Heading from the hilltop we make our way down and around the estuaries to the fine sand beaches on the Northeast coast of Christchurch. On a hot day take a dip in the water or just relax on the beach and take in the evening vibes. As you relax, swim or walk, an afternoon tea of cold/hot drinks and savoury snacks will be served. As the sun begins to set we head back around the coastal village along the estuary. We may be lucky enough to see the migrating Bar-tailed Godwits on their arrival from Alaska 12,000km in September – March.


This is the end of the tour You will be dropped back at the Art Centre/ I – Site in Central City thank you.
